Let’s look at some of the facts about arthritis:

    ●   1 in 6 Australians has arthritis. That’s 3.9 million people.
    ●   This number will go up to 5.4 million by 2030.
    ●   52,000 Australians in the age group of 15-64 years can’t work due to arthritis.
    ●   Arthritis health system costs will rise from 5.5 billion in 2015 to 7.6 billion by 2030.
  • What is arthritis?
Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. The term itself is a misnomer because arthritis involves a complex combination of conditions and mechanisms and not just the inflammation. Generally, it involves swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. There are several different types of arthritis, but two most common one’s are:

    ●Osteoarthritis
This involves breakdown of the cartilage, which is a soft slippery tissue covering the ends of bones at the joint.
    ●Rheumatoid Arthritis
In this type of arthritis, the joints are attacked by the immune system of the person, starting from the lining of joints.

Other causes of arthritis include (but are not limited to):
-Seronegative arthritis as Ankylosing spondylitis, Psoriatic arthritis
-Infectious Arthritis: viral arthritis, septic arthritis
    -Hematological conditions- hemophilia, gout
    -Juvenile arthritis in Children
  • What are the symptoms of arthritis?
The most common symptoms of arthritis are:
    ● Joint pain
    ● Stiffness
    ● Swelling
    ● Redness of skin around the joint
    ● Decreased range of motion

  • What are the causes of arthritis?
Cartilage is a soft tissue that covers the ends of the bones forming the joints. It absorbs pressure and shock and hence protects the joints when you are moving or putting a lot of stress on them. In arthritis, the amount and quality of cartilage tissue decreases.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common types of arthritis. This breakdown of cartilage is a part of the process which may or may not involve inflammation. People with a family history of the disease and high BMI have a higher risk of developing OA.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), which is an autoimmune disorder, is caused when your immune system starts attacking the tissues. Due to this, the synovial tissue, which produces a fluid for the nourishment and lubrication of joints, is affected.
  • How should arthritis be managed?
The management of arthritis should involve multidisciplinary care and should not just focus on medications alone. The reasons for this are:

    ● Taking medication for your entire life is impractical
    ● Medicines have side-effects
    ● More importantly, pain medication is not always effective in controlling pain for all the patients.
